Zombie Girl (3D shading effects)
How to take any drawing and turn it into a vector illustration in Flash.
As a freelancer, I create animation art for sale to be used for textiles, printing, screen printing, or to have ready when I create future animations.
From concept to final, it took 2.5 hours to complete.
Take a picture of the drawing and email the picture to yourself, or find an image you want to trace. Imported the picture into FlashCS6 and place it on the timeline/stage. Turn it the picture into a symbol and lowered the opacity.
Trace and ink over the illustration with the INK TOOL. I highly recommend the CINTIQ 13HD WACOM TABLET and PEN.
Coloring your illustration:
Use the FILL IN tool…
To add a texture to an image, select a free image on file, or online.
Color the object main color. Add the texture file, above the object.
Create a MASK LAYER that has the shape of the object.
*cut and paste the object. Delete any parts of the image that will not have the texture.
Make the texture image a symbol. Go to:
Go to MULTIPLY, or the other effects and see how the texture looks above the object. LOCK the MASK and texture file to see what it looks like.
Select parts of the filled in colored sections (with the “paint selected” on), color in the details, shadows, and highlights.
I changed the color of the dress in the process. You will find it common to play and edit with colors. Sometimes a character will look better in another color after adding a background.
Highlight and shadows can are a shade lighter and darker of the main color. (blue dress: lighter blue for highlights, darker blue for shading).
Highlights and shading for the background…
To add more depth, shade and highlight on a new layer over the image. Draw with black at a 20-40 opacity for shading. Draw with the white color at the same opacity range, 20-40 (only a recommendation.)
Go to FILE>EXPORT>EXPORT IMAGE. Create a JPEG OR PNG in 96-300dpi (depending on what the image will be used for.)
